Legends Podcast #403; Love Actually (Christmas)

Legends is celebrating the Christmas season with two modern classics that celebrate their 15th anniversary this year! This week we’re talking about 2003’s Love Actually, written and directed by Richard Curtis, which spawned a number of holiday themed knock-offs with interconnected characters (Mother’s Day, anyone?) and boasted numerous actors in smaller parts who have now achieved mega-stardom. It’s now a staple of holiday viewing, but is it a Christmas Legend? Or does this movie “Actually” stink?

Legends is celebrating the Christmas season with two modern classics that celebrate their 15th anniversary this year! First up is 2003’s Elf, directed by Jon Favreau, which spawned a Broadway musical and a TV holiday special, and launched Favreau’s career as a blockbuster director. It’s now a staple of holiday viewing, but is it a Christmas Legend? Or should this “Elf” stay on the shelf?

Legends Podcast #401; Highlander (Second Opinion)

One-hundred and fifteen episodes ago, Wing, Beef, and Shark Taco decreed that Highlander was one of the worst movies they’d ever seen. It joined Spring Breakers at the bottom of the ratings chart, where it has remained until this day. This has stuck in Lobster’s craw since he joined the podcast two years ago. Now is the time of The Gathering, when an elderly Spaniard will join Lobster in the fray to defend Highlander’s honor. The Prize, if they win: the film will be redeemed. If they lose, it will live forever as the worst of the worst. In the end, this is Legends Four Hundred and (There Can Be Only) One!

Legends Podcast #400; The Princess Bride (Anniversary Special)

It’s the timeless tale of a little boy who lies sick in bed one wintery Chicago day. He plays a video game called "Hardball," produced by Accolade, Inc., in 1985, for the Commodore 64 computer system. It’s the bottom of the third inning, and Allen steps up to the plate...

What kind of story is this? Is this a trick? I thought we were doing something epic for our Four Hundredth Episode.

Keep your shirt on, and let me read! Now, where was I? Right, this movie has everything: fencing, fighting, torture, revenge, giants, monsters, chases, escapes, true love, miracles… It’s The Princess Bride, and this is Legends 400!

Legends Podcast #395; IT 2017 (Legends of Halloween)

Stephen King’s classic novel of childhood terror got an update last year courtesy of director Andy Muschietti, after the project spent years in development hell. Twenty-seven years after Tim Curry’s Pennywise haunted our childhoods, “It” returned once again, this time in the form of Bill Skarsgard. 2017’s IT managed to float away with the box office and became the highest-grossing horror film of all time. But do clowns still scare the pants off our three hosts? Join us and find out… This is Legends of Halloween!

Panos Cosmatos took film festivals by storm this year with Mandy, a gruesome, neon-tinted revenge film that showcased Nicolas Cage at his most, well, Nicolas Cagey. After the brutal murder of his wife at the hands of religious cult, Cage goes on a killing spree to take down the cult leader and his biker gang henchmen. Guest host Ian Scott Todd from Primal Scenes joins us to delve into what  he called “one of the only horror films of this decade that’s truly effective.” This is Legends of Halloween!

Legends Podcast #392; Beetlejuice (Legends of Halloween)

Director Tim Burton is known for his gothic eccentricity and distinctive visual style. Nowhere is this more evident than in his second feature film, Beetlejuice. A tale of death and dismemberment that somehow plays as a family film, Beetlejuice helped propel Burton to Legendary status, as well as cementing the movie star status of Michael Keaton (who would don the cape and cowl for Burton the following year) and Winona Ryder (who would return to the decade that made her famous in Stranger Things.) But thirty years later, is Beetlejuice still the Ghost with the Most. Oh, crap I said his name three times! This is Legends of Halloween!

Legends Podcast #390; Power of Grayskull (He-Man Documentary)

Earlier this year, the Mister Rogers documentary Won’t You Be My Neighbor? became the highest-grossing biographical documentary of all time. The film was part of the current trend toward docs featuring serious examination of entertainment properties, driven in part by crowdfunding on sites like Kickstarter. This week, we’re taking a look at a documentary on another important children’s television program, He-Man and the Masters of the Universe. The doc Power of Grayskull: The Definitive History delves into the origins of the franchise from humble toy line to pop culture phenomenon. But does the film earn the right to wield the Sword of Power, or does it feel like a cheap store-brand knock-off? (That’s right, we’re looking at you, Arak: Son of Thunder.)

Legends Podcast #389; The Longest Yard (RIP Burt Reynolds)

This week we’re paying homage to the late, great Burt Reynolds, who passed away earlier this month, with one of his most famous roles. But we’re also celebrating the start of football season with a gridiron classic. When a disgraced quarterback runs afoul of the law, he must field a team of hardened convicts to take on the abusive guards in a game behind bars and on the gridiron. The Longest Yard, directed by Hollywood legend Robert Aldrich, further cemented Burt Reynolds’ movie star status while making a killing at the box office. But does the movie, which also spawned a mega-successful remake in 2005, score a touchdown with our hosts, or should it be sent to the swamp?

Legends Podcast #388; Creed (Rocky Arc)

This week we’re back to general movie legends after a month of heists and capers, and what better place to start then with a revival of one of the most legendary movie franchises - Rocky. A decade after Rocky Balboa purportedly ended the franchise, and forty years after the original title bout, director Ryan Coogler brings Rocky’s rival’s son into the ring in Creed. Frequent Coogler collaborator Michael B. Jordan plays Adonis Creed, while Sly Stallone himself steps back into the role that made him famous, and garnered his second Oscar nomination for playing the titular pugilist. Though the film artfully blends the hero worship of Rocky the fictional boxer with that of Rocky the real-life movie star, does Creed stand toe-to-toe with the original or does it pull its punches? Let’s get ready to rumble!

Legends Podcast is cracking open the cinematic vault and bringing you a whole month of cons, capers, and car chases! Whether you’re a grifter, a hacker, a freelance spy, a bank robber, or a wheelman, you’ll find the big score right here on our podcast. This is Aug-Heist!

This week we’re talking about Baby Driver from 2017. This film marked the first big-screen outing for director Edgar Wright after he wrapped up his Three Flavours Cornetto Trilogy, and Baby Driver tells the story of the titular reluctant wheelman, Baby, who is actually a grown-up. The odd title didn’t confuse audiences, however, as the summer release turned out to be Wright’s biggest box-office success ever. Showcasing thrilling car chases choreographed to a peppy pop-rock soundtrack, Baby Driver scored with moviegoers, but will it score with the three flavors of podcast host as we judge the final installment of Aug-Heist 2018?

This week we’re talking about Inside Man from 2006. This film marked the fourth collaboration between acclaimed director Spike Lee and actor Denzel Washington, and it proved to be a winning game plan as the movie boosted Lee’s biggest box office haul to date. This week we’re talking about Ronin from 1998, which brings together a band of covert operatives in post-Cold War France on the hunt for a mysterious case. Directed by John Frankenheimer, this hard-boiled thriller earned praise for its realistic car chases and gritty action that influenced the Bond and Bourne franchises in the next decade. However, the film was also criticized for its overworked plot and reliance on trope. Legends Podcast #378; Jurassic Park 25th Anniversary Special

Twenty-five years ago, an amazing entertainment spectacle showcased a radical new technology that brought extinct creatures to life and captured the imagination of the entire world. The fact that it happened to be a movie about an entertainment spectacle that showcased a radical new technology bringing extinct creatures to life was purely coincidental. Unlike the titular amusement park, the movie was a monumental success and hatched a franchise that, though at times seemed endangered, has yet to go extinct. Welcome to Jurassic Park!

Legends Podcast #377; Kill Me Three Times (Thriller)

Legends Podcast makes a detour to the Western Coast of Australia for a wannabe Tarantino flick from director Kriv Stenders! Co-starring Westworld’s Luke Hemsworth (brother of Thor), Kill Me Three Times also brings us Simon Pegg as a sardonic hit man in a layered tale of betrayal and revenge. The movie has more twists than you could shake a didgeridoo at, but is Kill Me Three Times worth watching more than once? Stay till the end, lobster comes in hot!

Legends Podcast #376; Solo (Star Wars)

A mere five months after Star Wars: The Last Jedi divided fans with its treatment of beloved characters, Lucasfilm goes back to the well of the franchise’s mythos for another anthology piece, this time focusing on a young Han Solo. Although Solo: A Star Wars Story’s opening was a box office disappointment, early reviews and fan reaction were positive. Now Legends Podcast is wading into the fracas, hoping to make sense of this bunch of mumbo-jumbo. Will we decide we’d rather watch the paint dry on Jabba the Hutt’s self-portrait, or will we Jedi Mind Trick you into seeing the movie? That’s not how the Force works!

Legends Podcast #375; Firefly Duo (TV Show)

With Solo: A Star Wars Story hitting the big screen, Legends Podcast takes a look back at another swashbuckling band of spacefaring misfits: the crew of Serenity from Joss Whedon’s Firefly. We think Mal and company could sit comfortably beside Han, Chewie, and Lando, so we’ve picked out a pair of episodes from Firefly’s first and only season, “The Train Job” and “Our Mrs. Reynolds,” which we think make a nice duo to discuss before Solo. We aim to misbehave, but never tell us the odds!

Legends Podcast #374; Deadpool 2 (Unicorns)

After eviscerating Valentine’s Day box office records, the Merc with a Mouth is at it again, this time setting his sights on Summer Movie Season. Deadpool 2, which adds Josh Brolin’s Cable and a fanny pack full of fresh faces, hopes to re-write history with a super-duper effing team movie. Will the one-time Green Lantern Ryan Reynolds be able to build a marketable franchise around an R-rating up against the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Star Wars? If not, we hear that X-Force is hiring...

Legends Podcast #373; Get Out (Horror)

Legends Podcast takes a detour from blockbuster to Blumhouse with 2017’s surprisingly successful debut film from writer/director Jordan Peele. In making the transition from TV sketch comedy to horror, Peele put a terrifying spin on the classic “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner?” set-up. Get Out earned a massive $250 million on a four-and-a-half million dollar budget and garnered multiple awards and nominations, including an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay for Peele. But does this scary story add up to a modern classic, or should Peele “Get Out” of the movie business? (Seriously, though, he shouldn't.)

Legends Podcast #372; Avengers: Infinity War (Marvel)

The Marvel Cinematic Universe spent 18 films building to an epic showdown with Thanos, the Mad Titan. Avengers: Infinity War is the culmination of ten years’ worth of storytelling, featuring dozens of characters, various locations across the cosmos, and stakes high enough to bring together Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, the Guardians of the Galaxy, the Master of the Mystic Arts, and your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. While the film has already broken box office records around the globe, it has left lingering questions about the future of MCU and the nature of filmmaking itself. Now, Legends Podcast sits down to talk about the movie while we watch the sun rise on a grateful - or ungrateful - universe. Just don’t call us plucky - we don’t know what it means.

Legends Podcast #371; Sunshine (Sci-Fi)

In 2007, one movie brought together Scarecrow, Captain America, Captain Phillipa Georgiou, Moira MacTaggart, Wong, the dad from Fear the Walking Dead, and Sinestro. That movie was written by the man who would create Ex Machina and directed by the man who will direct the 25th James Bond installment. That movie was Sunshine, and it was a box office flop. But just over a decade later, the legacy of the film seems brighter as many of its stars have found the spotlight and its director won a shiny Oscar for Slumdog Millionaire. So, should Sunshine go gently into that good night, or should it rage, rage against the dying of the light?

Legends Podcast #370; Marvel’s The Avengers (Marvel)

There was an idea… to bring together a group of Marvel’s B-List superheroes to see if they could become something more than just a bunch of characters we still had the rights to. To see if they could work together when we needed them to fight the box office battles that the X-Men, Spider-Man, and the Fantastic Four never could. To see if a throwaway gag in a post-credits scene could actually become one of the highest grossing movies of all time. And then to use a post-credits scene in that movie to set up an even bigger crossover movie six years later. We’ll call it The Avengers, an “Earth’s Mightiest Heroes” type of thing, and it might take us a while to get any traction, but once we do… the possibilities are infinite!

Legends Podcast #369; Super Troopers (Comedy)

Meow is the time for Legends Podcast to celebrate one of the most successful independent comedies of the mew millenium! Meow the year was 2001, and one movie hit it big at Sundance and won the audience award at South by South West. That movie was Super Troopers, meow, and it featured the Broken Lizard comedy troupe meowt of Colgate University. Meow these friends would go on to make other mewvies, but Super Troopers stood the test of time and meowlasted the rest. In fact, after some nimbly-pimbly crowdsourcing, Super Troopers 2 is in theaters right meow. You heard me, you can go to theater, order a liter-a-cola and watch the sequel right after you listen to this podcast! But be sure to drive safely meow!

Legends Podcast #365 Black Mirror

In a rare turn of events, Legends Podcast tackles a television show. We’re talking about the science-fiction-gone-horribly-wrong anthology series from the twisted mind of Charlie Booker. Originally on Channel 4 in the UK, Netflix picked up the show because of course they did. They play for keeps. To facilitate our discussion, we’ve made up a little game of our own. The rules are simple. Each host picks an episode, and we discuss. Join us as a we stare into the void of Black Mirror!

Legends Podcast #363; Mute (Sci-Fi)

Legends Podcast returns to the work of director Duncan Jones after a misguided quest to Azeroth. Mute brings Jones down to Earth and returns to the hard sci-fi future he introduced in Moon. Mute tells the story of a mute Amish man searching for his missing girlfriend in Berlin, which, as it turns out, is easier said than done. But does this Netflix-released film help Jones re-discover his voice and leave us as speechless as his directorial debut or is Mute a case of the less said, the better? Will Beef give Mute a full-throated endorsement or hold his tongue? Will Wing ferm sa gulue or shout Mute’s praises from the rooftops? Will Lobster ever run out of puns and shut his damn mouth? Turn up the volume and listen in as we sound off on Mute!
