Legends is celebrating the Christmas season with two modern classics that celebrate their 15th anniversary this year! This week we’re talking about 2003’s Love Actually, written and directed by Richard Curtis, which spawned a number of holiday themed knock-offs with interconnected characters (Mother’s Day, anyone?) and boasted numerous actors in smaller parts who have now achieved mega-stardom. It’s now a staple of holiday viewing, but is it a Christmas Legend? Or does this movie “Actually” stink? Spoiler Alert! Spoiler Alert! One-hundred and fifteen episodes ago, Wing, Beef, and Shark Taco decreed that Highlander was one of the worst movies they’d ever seen. It joined Spring Breakers at the bottom of the ratings chart, where it has remained until this day. This has stuck in Lobster’s craw since he joined the podcast two years ago. Now is the time of The Gathering, when an elderly Spaniard will join Lobster in the fray to defend Highlander’s honor. The Prize, if they win: the film will be redeemed. If they lose, it will live forever as the worst of the worst. In the end, this is Legends Four Hundred and (There Can Be Only) One! Spoiler Alert! Spoiler Alert! Stephen King’s classic novel of childhood terror got an update last year courtesy of director Andy Muschietti, after the project spent years in development hell. Twenty-seven years after Tim Curry’s Pennywise haunted our childhoods, “It” returned once again, this time in the form of Bill Skarsgard. 2017’s IT managed to float away with the box office and became the highest-grossing horror film of all time. But do clowns still scare the pants off our three hosts? Join us and find out… This is Legends of Halloween!

Panos Cosmatos took film festivals by storm this year with Mandy, a gruesome, neon-tinted revenge film that showcased Nicolas Cage at his most, well, Nicolas Cagey. After the brutal murder of his wife at the hands of religious cult, Cage goes on a killing spree to take down the cult leader and his biker gang henchmen. Guest host Ian Scott Todd from Primal Scenes joins us to delve into what he called “one of the only horror films of this decade that’s truly effective.” This is Legends of Halloween!

Director Tim Burton is known for his gothic eccentricity and distinctive visual style. Nowhere is this more evident than in his second feature film, Beetlejuice. A tale of death and dismemberment that somehow plays as a family film, Beetlejuice helped propel Burton to Legendary status, as well as cementing the movie star status of Michael Keaton (who would don the cape and cowl for Burton the following year) and Winona Ryder (who would return to the decade that made her famous in Stranger Things.) But thirty years later, is Beetlejuice still the Ghost with the Most. Oh, crap I said his name three times! This is Legends of Halloween!

Earlier this year, the Mister Rogers documentary Won’t You Be My Neighbor? became the highest-grossing biographical documentary of all time. The film was part of the current trend toward docs featuring serious examination of entertainment properties, driven in part by crowdfunding on sites like Kickstarter. This week, we’re taking a look at a documentary on another important children’s television program, He-Man and the Masters of the Universe. The doc Power of Grayskull: The Definitive History delves into the origins of the franchise from humble toy line to pop culture phenomenon. But does the film earn the right to wield the Sword of Power, or does it feel like a cheap store-brand knock-off? (That’s right, we’re looking at you, Arak: Son of Thunder.)

This week we’re paying homage to the late, great Burt Reynolds, who passed away earlier this month, with one of his most famous roles. But we’re also celebrating the start of football season with a gridiron classic. When a disgraced quarterback runs afoul of the law, he must field a team of hardened convicts to take on the abusive guards in a game behind bars and on the gridiron. The Longest Yard, directed by Hollywood legend Robert Aldrich, further cemented Burt Reynolds’ movie star status while making a killing at the box office. But does the movie, which also spawned a mega-successful remake in 2005, score a touchdown with our hosts, or should it be sent to the swamp?

This week we’re back to general movie legends after a month of heists and capers, and what better place to start then with a revival of one of the most legendary movie franchises - Rocky. A decade after Rocky Balboa purportedly ended the franchise, and forty years after the original title bout, director Ryan Coogler brings Rocky’s rival’s son into the ring in Creed. Frequent Coogler collaborator Michael B. Jordan plays Adonis Creed, while Sly Stallone himself steps back into the role that made him famous, and garnered his second Oscar nomination for playing the titular pugilist. Though the film artfully blends the hero worship of Rocky the fictional boxer with that of Rocky the real-life movie star, does Creed stand toe-to-toe with the original or does it pull its punches? Let’s get ready to rumble!

The Marvel Cinematic Universe spent 18 films building to an epic showdown with Thanos, the Mad Titan. Avengers: Infinity War is the culmination of ten years’ worth of storytelling, featuring dozens of characters, various locations across the cosmos, and stakes high enough to bring together Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, the Guardians of the Galaxy, the Master of the Mystic Arts, and your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. While the film has already broken box office records around the globe, it has left lingering questions about the future of MCU and the nature of filmmaking itself. Now, Legends Podcast sits down to talk about the movie while we watch the sun rise on a grateful - or ungrateful - universe. Just don’t call us plucky - we don’t know what it means.

There was an idea… to bring together a group of Marvel’s B-List superheroes to see if they could become something more than just a bunch of characters we still had the rights to. To see if they could work together when we needed them to fight the box office battles that the X-Men, Spider-Man, and the Fantastic Four never could. To see if a throwaway gag in a post-credits scene could actually become one of the highest grossing movies of all time. And then to use a post-credits scene in that movie to set up an even bigger crossover movie six years later. We’ll call it The Avengers, an “Earth’s Mightiest Heroes” type of thing, and it might take us a while to get any traction, but once we do… the possibilities are infinite!
