Legends Podcast #508; The Hidden Fortress (Japanuary)

We’re wrapping up our Kurosawa trilogy with 1958’s The Hidden Fortress. Cited often as one of George Lucas’s direct inspirations for Star Wars, The Hidden Fortress features two bumbling fools, a fugitive princess, a badass swordsman, and a scarred bad guy who carries a grudge but is ultimately redeemed by his good heart! Toshiro Mifune shows up again for the third time this month in this epic from a long time ago and somewhere far, far away - feudal Japan!

Legends Podcast #507; Seven Samurai (Japanuary)

We’re continuing the month with Kurosawa’s 1954 film Seven Samurai. Released by Toho Studios the same year as the first Godzilla, Seven Samurai actually cost more than the monster flick and took three times as long to shoot, and though both would be remembered as two of the greatest films ever made, Seven Samurai remains one of the most heavily referenced, remade, or reworked, films of all time. Coming in at a whopping three-and-a-half hours (with intermission!) Seven Samurai is hailed as the first modern action movie. This is episode Five Hundred and Seven of Legends Podcast!

Legends Podcast #506; Rashomon (Japanuary)

We’re kicking Japanese classics month off with Akira Kurosawa’s 1950 film Rashomon. Notable for its use of conflicting points-of-view on the same event, Rashomon has become synonymous for storytelling by unreliable narrators or differing takes on a simultaneous scene. Rashomon is considered one of the greatest movies ever made, but does it stand up to our Legendary scrutiny? We try to get our stories straight and start the year in style!

It’s one of the longest, darkest, coldest nights of the year. What better time to talk about child vampires? This week we’re taking a detour from our usual format and comparing the 2008 Swedish film Let the Right One In with its American remake, 2010’s Let Me In.

***This cast was nearly lost :/ and barely wrestled back from the missing audio gods.... Sorry for the uneven, sometimes poor audio quality***

We’re joined by author and John Hughes enthusiast D.X. Ferris to unpack the third film in the National Lampoon Vacation series, which was written by Hughes and based on his National Lampoon magazine short story “Vacation ‘59.” Swapping road trips for a stay-at-home old-fashioned family Christmas, the Griswolds endure flammable cats, flammable Christmas trees, and flammable sewer gas in a Yuletide celebration for the ages. So fill up your Marty Moose glasses with eggnog, grab your chainsaw, and check your sh!tters because this is a full-blown, four-alarm holiday episode of Legends Podcast!

Legends Podcast #501; GoldenEye (Bond Movies/25th Anniversary)

The first Bond movie not to be based on an Ian Fleming story, GoldenEye was a huge hit, grossing more than Dalton’s two flicks combined. Directed by Martin Campbell (who would return to introduce a new Bond with Casino Royale) and introducing Judi Dench as M, GoldenEye also spawned a hit video game that might be more popular than the movie. Brosnan went on to play Bond three more times, but never quite achieved the acclaim he received for his first outing. Now, twenty-five years later, we’re playing a few rounds in the Facility to celebrate GoldenEye.

It turns out that the apocalypse would have a wait a few years, but here we are in 2020 dealing with one biblical plague after another. (Who had “murder hornets” for May?) The best apocalypse movie of the year 2012 was actually a straight horror movie - that wasn’t what it looked like. Join us as Legends of Halloween spends the night in The Cabin in the Woods. Scott Pilgrim vs. The World is a great example of a story that works on paper (as a graphic novel by Bryan Lee O’Malley, specifically) but could never work on the big screen. Legends Podcast #469; Jay and Silent Bob Reboot (420)

It’s 4/20 of 4/2020. You knew we had to do a weed movie, right?

Kevin Smith holds a special place in the heart of movie geeks. He’s a divisive figure, sure, just as often on the wrong side of a controversy as on the right side of it. And his fans will probably attack me for saying that he was ever wrong. But he’s proven that he’s capable of admitting that he was wrong, learning from it, and coming out all the better for it, both creatively and - in the case of his recent on-stage heart attack - healthier, too.

So what to make of his iconic characters, Jay and Silent Bob, returning to stop a remake - ahem, reboot - of their 2001 film Bluntman and Chronic, as seen in 2001 film Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. To add to the metatextual nature, the reboot is being directed by Kevin Smith, and everyone knows he’s a hack. And one character is reuniting with his daughter - who’s played by Kevin Smith’s real-life daughter - but it’s not the character you think. Meta!

Snoochie boochies!

Legends Podcast #452; Galaxy Quest (Legends of ‘99)

Twenty years ago, American cinemas were rocked by one of the best overall years in movie history. Legends Podcast has celebrated the Legends of ‘99 all year long, and now we’re wrapping up with our most favorite films of the year.

Finally, Lobster brings our celebration of ‘99 to its natural conclusion. There were many fine films of 1999, but the years have dimmed the luster of some of the year’s top contenders. And though many films of ‘99 are still beloved by audiences, very few have seen their legend grow over the two decades since their release the way this film’s legend has. There were many fine films of 1999, but none finer than Galaxy Quest. Released on Christmas Day, the film, which came out of a troubled production for DreamWorks Studios, flew under box office radar, but earned praise from critics and audiences alike, and secured an enduring legacy as what George Takei called “a chillingly realistic documentary.” Now, MovieDude Eric joins Beef, Wing, and Lobster to take on the final Legend of ‘99. Never give up, never surrender!

Twenty years ago, American cinemas were rocked by one of the best overall years in movie history. Legends Podcast has celebrated the Legends of ‘99 all year long, and now we’re wrapping up with our most favorite films of the year.

Next, Wing brings us the all star cast of 1999’s lone superhero movie, Mystery Men. Yes, based on the Dark Horse title Flaming Carrot Comics, this was the only notable comic book movie in one of the greatest years of cinematic history. Mystery Men simultaneously predicted the next twenty years of box office hits and failed to make any money whatsoever, grossing less than half its overall budget. But is this film ahead of its time, or is the only mystery here why we’re mentioning it in the same breath as the best films of ‘99?

Twenty years ago, American cinemas were rocked by one of the best overall years in movie history. Legends Podcast has celebrated the Legends of ‘99 all year long, and now we’re wrapping up with our most favorite films of the year.

First up, it’s Beef’s pick, and it’s perhaps the weirdest film in the Class of ‘99, which is really saying something. Written by Charlie Kaufman and directed by Three Kings co-star Spike Jonze, Being John Malkovich was a critical darling, a box office hit, and was nominated for three Academy Awards. It’s also a commentary on identity, celebrity, and power. But does it hold up ten year later? Or should the door to John Malkovich mind be shut forever? Legends Podcast #449; Flight of the Navigator (Chronovember)

Fall back in time with Legends Podcast! All month long, we’re talking about time travel, paradoxes, and compliance.

In the summer of 1982, director Stephen Spielberg’s E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial rocketed to the top of the box office and surpassed Star Wars to become the highest-grossing film of all time. The film was aimed squarely at kids, starring a youngster and his likeable alien friend, with no “bad guys” except for the shadowy government types who doggedly pursue the two. E.T.’s success inspired plenty of knock-offs throughout the ‘80s, including The Last Starfighter, Explorers, *batteries not included, and Mac and Me. Not to be left out, Walt Disney Pictures released Flight of the Navigator in 1986, about a time-displaced child and a talking spaceship voiced by Pee-Wee Herman star Paul Reubens. The film was a modest hit during Disney’s “dark age,” but nowhere near as successful as E.T. Disney has promised to make a reboot since 2009, so Legends Podcast wraps up its time travel month with Beef’s childhood favorite. Do not know “promise…” This is Chronovember!

Legends Podcast #448; Timeline (Chronovember)

During his prolific career, author Michael Crichton brought dinosaurs back to life, explored a jungle ruled by evil gorillas, terrorized us with a virus from outer space, and proved that footnotes and dense technical descriptions could have a place in bestselling novels. Most importantly, his works were tailor-made for the movies, with seven of his books getting the big-screen treatment in the ‘90s. Crichton capped his amazing run with a novel that tackled sci-fi’s holy grail - time travel - with his signature exhaustive pseudoscientific detail. In 2003, ace action director Richard Donner brought Timeline to life with a Paul Walker led feature film, about a group of scholars sent back in time to medieval France. There's one thing worse than dying here, and that's living here... This is Chronovember!

Legends Podcast #447; Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure (Chronovember)

Fall back in time with Legends Podcast! All month long, we’re talking about time travel, paradoxes, and being excellent to each other.

Time travel is extremely complicated, rife with unintended consequences. You could accidentally erase yourself from existence or change the course of all of history. Or you could, you know, kidnap half a dozen historical figures just to get a passing grade in high school social studies. Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure accomplished this consequence-free time travel with just a phone booth, and it scored big at the box office, with one sequel in 1991, two television spin-offs (one live-action and one animated) and a third film, Bill & Ted Face the Music, in the works for summer 2020 release. Strange things are afoot at the Circle K... This is Chronovember!

The Terminator franchise can't be bargained with. It can't be reasoned with. It doesn't feel pity, or remorse, or fear! And it absolutely will not stop, ever... until you are dead! This past weekend’s release of Terminator: Dark Fate proved that statement definitively as the film became the third attempt to restart the franchise in only a decade. But will the fact that Fate delivered less than $30 million at the box office be enough to convince Hollywood to terminate this aging relic? Or will future time travelers be able to erase the past ten years of reboots? We’re going back to the beginning to see if there’s hope. Come with us if you want to live... This is Chronovember!

Legends Podcast #445; The VVitch (Legends of Halloween)

Daylight savings threw beef off, he thought it was sent time back a full week... not clocks back an hour.. his bad! your final Legends of Halloween for 2019

Director Robert Eggers made a name for himself with the 2015 release of his debut film, The Witch. Stylized as The VVitch, the film, set in colonial New England with all its "thees" and "thous," established Eggers's bonafides as an auteur with an instinct for authenticity. With his next film, The Lighthouse, now in theaters and earning rave reviews, Wing and Lobster venture into the woods to see a goat about a man. Move along, this is Legends of Halloween… pilgrim.

Legends Podcast #444; ThanksKilling (Legends of Halloween)

Thanksgiving is a time when friends and family gather together to eat, watch football, and be grateful. And what podcast wouldn’t be grateful to have listeners who request films for us to watch and rate? Films like 2009’s ThanksKilling, a direct-to-video horror-comedy flick so absurd that no studio would touch it. And by no studio, we mean that literally: the filmmakers made it for $3,500 and sold copies of the DVD on Amazon directly to people desperate enough to buy a movie that promised “tits in a first second!” After taking more than a year to sell just 1,000 copies, ThanksKilling has since become a cult classic, with a KickStarter-funded sequel and even a musical adaptation. Now, Legends Podcast is talking turkey. Gobble, gobble, motherfeather, this is Legends of Halloween!

Legends Podcast #443; The Sixth Sense (Legends of Halloween ‘99)

The second-highest grossing release of 1999, sitting at $672.8 million worldwide, was M. Night Shyamalan’s supernatural horror drama film The Sixth Sense, starring Bruce Willis and Haley Joel Osment. The film spent five weeks at number one in the U.S. box office, was nominated for six Academy Awards, and introduced the phrase “I see dead people” into the pop culture lexicon. The film’s final twist, which became a Shyamalan trademark, kept audiences going back to see if they could spot the clues, which also translated to strong VHS sales and rental figures when The Sixth Sense was released on home video. Now, Legends Podcast is ready to tell you Bruce Willis’s secret… he’s wearing a hairpiece.

Legends Podcast #442; American Psycho with Spoilers for Joker (Legends of Halloween)

Based on the equally divisive novel by Bret Easton Ellis, the film American Psycho has been polarizing audiences since it premiered at the Sundance Film Festival nearly two decades ago. Set in the late ‘80s, released in the year 2000, and now seen as a cult classic, the horror-comedy put Christian Bale on the map - and also spawned an ‘80s pop-infused musical. In the words of director Mary Harron, the film also reads “as a scenario of female terror,” as relevant today as when it was made. Likewise, controversy over the film’s violence and descent into madness mirrors the concern over the recent release of Joker, which explores similar themes. And now, in the wilds of Wall Street, three podcasters whip out and compare their business cards… this is Legends of Halloween!

Legends Podcast #441; The Blair Witch Project (Legends of Halloween ‘99)

One of 1999’s breakout success stories was a found-footage horror movie, a student documentary, a Sundance darling, an elaborate hoax, a sleeper hit, one of the most successful independent films of all time, and a viral marketing experiment that resulted in the film’s three stars being listed as “missing, presumed dead” on the website IMDb for over a year. The Blair Witch Project, a long-gestating production from amateur filmmakers Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sánchez, made on a shoestring budget of just sixty thousand dollars, grossed near $250 million at the box office. It finished in tenth place domestically, beating out other horror entries from masters like Tim Burton and Stephen King. The Blair Witch Project launched a whole genre of horror, from Paranormal Activity to Cloverfield and Chronicle. And now, in the woods of rural Maryland, three podcasters welcome in the season of evil… this is Legends of Halloween!

Legends Podcast #440; Inglourious Basterds (Tarantino)

Quentin Tarantino’s films seem to excite and divide audiences with equal fervor. His 2009 World War II masterpiece, Inglourious Basterds, was met with approval, but not universal acclaim. The film’s breakout star, Christoph Waltz, won an Academy Award for his role as SS colonel Hans Landa, but Basterds lost out in the Best Picture race to another war movie, The Hurt Locker. Dealing as it does with the theme of fighting fascism by any means necessary, Tarantino’s sixth film feels more timely now than it did ten years ago. But does this equate to a film that is more divisive a decade later? Join Beef, Wing, and Lobster as they go back to once upon a time… in Nazi-occupied France.

Legends Podcast #439; Analyze This (Legends of ‘99)

This week, we’re checking ourselves in for some therapy with Analyze This. Harold Ramis paired Robert DeNiro and Billy Crystal for a gangland comedy that parodied films like The Godfather and A Bronx Tale and was co-written by esteemed playwright Kennth Lonergan. Before he fully embraced his comedic side with his role in Meet the Parents, DeNiro played to type with his role of an emotionally distraught mob boss Paul Viti, while Crystal played… well, himself, as a psychiatrist who gets caught up in the What About Bob?-style shenanigans. But is Analyze This all that? Or does this film still have issues it needs to work through?

Legends Podcast #438; Gosford Park (Mystery)

American director Robert Altman’s career spanned forty years, and included critical and commercial successes like M*A*S*H, McCabe and Mrs. Miller, The Long Goodbye, and Nashville. Altman’s films often featured large ensemble casts, improvisational dialogue, and social commentary - all of which are on full display in 2001’s Gosford Park. Based on an idea of an Agatha Christie-style whodunit set at an English manor house that Altman developed with Bob Balaban, Gosford Park’s script was written by Julian Fellowes, who won an Academy Award for Best Screenplay. Fellowes later went on to create the period drama series Downton Abbey, which, like Gosford Park, centered on both the aristocrats and the servants at a country estate. Now, as Downton Abbey moves to the big screen this fall, Legends Podcast goes on a hunting weekend to the English countryside to see what all the fuss is about.

This week Legends Podcast goes back to school with Election, starring Matthew Broderick and Reese Witherspoon. Directed by Alexander Payne and produced by MTV Films, Election is a biting satire of high school politics that also presages the recount drama of the 2000 Election. Joining us this week as substitute teacher is Ian, author of the film blog Primal Scenes, which is a good thing because we’re still not clear on the difference between ethics and morals. Anyone? Legends Podcast #436; Ocean's 8 (Aug-Heist)

Legends Podcast is cracking open the cinematic vault and bringing you a whole month of cons, capers, and car chases! Whether you’re an East End card sharp, a handsome art thief, a trio of rogue soldiers, or eight feisty heisting heroines, you’ll find the big score right here on our podcast. This is Aug-Heist!

This week we’re talking about Ocean’s 8, last summer’s hit heist movie that also happened to be a female-led spin-off of the Stephen Soderbergh franchise. Following Debbie Ocean - played by Sandra Bullock - and her crew - an all-star cast, of course - the film swaps casino halls for gala balls. At the summer box office, Oceans 8 scored big, with nearly $300 million worldwide against a $70 million budget. But do these queens of the screen successfully steal the crown jewels, or is this museum caper a few gems short of a full set?

Whether you’re an East End card sharp, a handsome art thief, a trio of rogue soldiers, or eight feisty heisting heroines, you’ll find the big score right here on our podcast. This is Aug-Heist!

This week we’re talking about Three Kings, also one of our Legends of ‘99, starring George Clooney, Mark Wahlberg, Ice Cube, and Spike Jonze as a group of soldiers who attempt to steal Saddam Hussien’s gold in the final days of Operation Desert Storm, but end up finding something else worth fighting for. Directed by David O. Russell, this boldly anti-war release from Warner Brothers also presaged the ideological grounds of the second Iraq War four years later. Based on a story idea allegedly stolen from John Ridley, Russell’s script and direction on his first major studio film set the trajectory for his career towards Oscar-nominated films like The Fighter (with Wahlberg), Silver Linings Playbook, and American Hustle. But do we three two kings of Legends Podcast agree that this film earns its gold, or does it deserve a dishonorable discharge?

Legends Podcast is cracking open the cinematic vault and bringing you a whole month of cons, capers, and car chases! Whether you’re an East End card sharp, a handsome art thief, a trio of rogue soldiers, or eight feisty heisting heroines, you’ll find the big score right here on our podcast. This is Aug-Heist!

This week we’re talking about The Thomas Crown Affair, also one of our Legends of ‘99, a remake of the 1968 Steve McQueen-Faye Dunaway caper. Action director John McTeirnan pairs Pierce Brosnan and Rene Russo in the lead roles, for a sexy update to the classic cat-and-mouse game between a wealthy art thief and a determined insurance investigator. The film employs - and also subverts - several heist movie tropes, but is the end result a new masterpiece or a cheap forgery of the original?

Legends Podcast #432; Surviving the Game (Hunting Humans)

Twenty-five years ago, Hollywood churned out another remake of “The Most Dangerous Game,” the classic tale of man-meets-man, man-hunts-man, hunter-becomes-the-hunted… you know, that old chestnut. Coming just a year after Jean-Claude Van Damme played a certain Hard Target, Surviving the Game combined the same basic plot with a fish-out-of-water story as a character actor from the city (Ice-T) is brought to the wilderness to run for his life from a group of other character actors (the late Rutger Hauer, Charles S. Dutton, Gary Busey, John C. McGinley, F. Murrary Abraham) with predictable results. But is this ‘90s throwback worth tracking down, or should it be left on the VHS shelf next to those jars of heads?

“In the cinematic justice system, hunting humans for sport is considered especially heinous. The dedicated podcasters who rate these vicious films are members of an elite squad known as the Most Dangerous Victims Unit. These are their stories.”

A handful of years ago Netflix jacked their prices and started  making TV shows and movies. It didn't take us long to realize that they are much better at making TV shows. Yet for some reason we keep going back to the well of Netflix movies. Most likely it's because they are free. Sometimes they’re good, sometimes they're bad , mostly they’re just free.  What will “I am mother” hold? Listen in and find out!

Legends Podcast #429; Batman (30th Anniversary)

Thirty years ago, Batman swept into movie theaters, ushering in the modern era of comic book movie-making. Directed by Tim Burton, starring Jack Nicholson as the Joker, Kim Basinger as Vicki Vale, and Michael Keaton as the man who launched fifty thousand letters protesting his casting as Bruce Wayne. Despite a troubled production which saw a writer’s strike, budget overruns, stolen film reels, and intense skepticism of the film’s tone and direction, Batman became the biggest movie of the year and fifth highest-grossing film of all time by the end of its run. Batman became one of the biggest movie franchises of the ‘90s, with another film by Burton and Keaton, and two more directed by Joel Schumacher with Val Kilmer and George Clooney taking turns in the Batsuit. But thirty years later, after Christopher Nolan’s super-successful trilogy with Christian Bale, Ben Affleck’s less-successful turn, and the casting of Robert Pattinson as The Batman in Matt Reeves upcoming film, does this version still light up our Batsignal? Or is the joke on us?

Legends Podcast #428; Skyscraper (Action)

We’re just past the summer solstice, and what better way to celebrate the longest day of the year than by watching The Rock climb the tallest building in the world? Another hit from the summer of 2018, Skyscraper featured Dwayne Johnson as a one-legged man in an ass-kicking contest, set in a Towering Inferno-meets-Die Hard pyrotechnic spectacular. However, the film was less successful domestically than it was overseas, grossing only $68 million in North America while it stacked up $236 million in foreign cinemas, playing off its Hong Kong setting and diverse cast. But finances aside, does Skyscraper live up to our towering expectations? Or does this movie need to take the express elevator to the bargain basement?

Legends Podcast #427; Star Wars: Episode I - The Phanton Menace (Legends of ‘99)

The highest-grossing movie of 1999 was the summer release of the long-anticipated return of Star Wars to the big screen. After Star Wars experienced a resurgence in the ‘90s thanks to the comic books, the Special Edition re-release of the original trilogy, and the “everything-but-the-movie” multimedia experiment Shadows of the Empire, George Lucas capped the decade with Star Wars - Episode I: The Phantom Menace, the first installment of the nine-episode saga he originally planned. Taking place a generation before A New Hope, Episode I told the story of young Anakin Skywalker, the future Darth Vader, here a precocious child. While the film was a box office and merchandising smash, it sparked bitter debate among fans, many of whom to this day will fly into a rage if you mention things like “midi-chlorians” or “Jar Jar Binks.” Still, there’s no denying that this movie exists, and as J.J. (Jar Jar?) Abrams gets set to wrap up the saga at the end of this year, Legends Podcast is joined by Jedi Master Kent from Arthouse Legends to discuss the movie that started it all… from a certain point of view.

The summer of 2018 saw a few breakout hits, but none more surprising than Jon M. Chu’s Crazy Rich Asians, which earned $238 million worldwide and came in at Number Seven at the domestic office between May and Labor Day. Based on the novel by Kevin Kwan, Crazy Rich Asians boasted the first time a film featured a majority-Asian cast in a modern setting since 1993’s The Joy Luck Club. And along with fellow 2018 megahit Black Panther, Crazy Rich Asians proved that American audiences are craving diversity in films. Now Legends Podcast is taking a first class flight to Singapore to learn how to make dumplings the old fashioned way.

Legends Podcast #425; The Mummy (Legends of ‘99)

Man, it’s a hot one… like the Sahara in the midday sun. The summer movie season is upon us, what better time to revisit some classics from the Summer of ‘99? First up is the unexpected hit The Mummy, starring Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz, which revived a long-buried horror franchise. The Mummy also paid homage to Hollywood adventure films like Raiders of the Lost Ark… which was paying homage to other Hollywood adventure films, proving that there’s nothing that can’t be dug up and brought back to life. Except, perhaps, The Mummy, as 2017’s Tom Cruise misfire proved. But twenty years later, does The Mummy of ‘99 still have the moves? Or should it stay under wraps?

Legends Podcast #424; Star Trek 2009 (Tenth Anniversary)

Ten years ago, director J.J. Abrams brought Star Trek back to the big screen in grand fashion, with a young cast and a surprising link to the original series. 2009’s Star Trek proved to be a summer blockbuster and the highest-grossing Trek film to date. It also proved to be Abram’s audition reel for a gig directing Star Wars - which he always professed was his first love. But a decade later, as J.J. wraps up his Star Wars run with The Rise of Skywalker, has the intervening time dimmed the shine of Star Trek’s lens flare? Or can we still detect a hint of that brand-new starship smell?

Legends Podcast #423; Pokémon: Detective Pikachu (Video Game Movie)

Video game movies have a long history of disappointing fans. And perhaps no video game franchise has been more beloved - in a wider variety of formats - than Pokémon. From the original Game Boy game to collectible card games to the augmented reality game Pokémon Go, Pikachu and his ilk of “pocket monsters” have captivated fans and garnered zealous devotion. And though Pokémon has inspired many animated stories, it always seemed unlikely that there would ever be a live-action version. The 2016 spin-off game Detective Pikachu presented the perfect opportunity to bring Pokémon to the big screen. But is this movie a “gotta catch” in the theater, or is it not effective at bringing the game to life?

Legends Podcast #422; Guardians (Russia)

There was an idea. To make a Russian knockoff of The Avengers! 2017’s Guardians was not a box office hit, but it represented an original attempt to recreate some of the success of American superhero films, typified by the Marvel Cinematic Universe, for another nation’s audience. Using archetypes from the comic book genre, Guardians assembles a fantastic group of individuals with superhuman abilities, and pits them against a mad scientist bent on world domination. Sound familiar? In the end, does Guardians manage tear down this wall of cliches, or do all of its superheroics get lost in translation?

Legends Podcast #421; Avengers: Endgame (Marvel)

There was an idea. To make a movie franchise last for twenty-two movies over ten years, building an interconnected universe based on comic book heroes, and culminating in an epic two-film story. And then there was an idea, in first half of that culminating story, to kill off half of those heroes - along with the rest of the universe. Avengers: Endgame snapped into theaters last week with massive expectations and even bigger box office results. Currently sitting at number two, worldwide, of all time, Endgame also earned rave reviews from critics and fans. The hosts of Legends Podcast assemble to talk about what might just be the most legendary movie ever. We’re in the Endgame now!

Legends Podcast #420; Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay (420)

It’s April 20ish - 4/20 - and it’s our 420th podcast. What else are we going to do but talk about the highest calibre of film that American cinema has to offer: the stoner comedy? 2008’s Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay was the long-awaited sequel to the original burger-based road trip movie. Starring John Cho and Kal Penn as two Amsterdam-bound potheads, the film’s surreal storyline was underscored by political and social satire as the film took jabs at the War on Terror, racial stereotyping and profiling, and the presidency of George W. Bush. But does this moveable feast (which also name-checks the Hemingway book) a cure our wanderlust, or does it leave us at stranded the gate?

Legends Podcast #419; Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle (420)

It’s April 20th - 4/20 - and we’re nearing our 420th podcast. What else are we going to do but talk about the highest calibre of film that American cinema has to offer: the stoner comedy? 2004’s Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle was a sleeper hit on DVD, grossing almost twice on home video as it made at the box office. Starring John Cho and Kal Penn as two slider-craving potheads, the film’s surreal storyline was underscored by the two characters wrestling with life-changing decisions. But does this movable feast cure our case of the munchies, or does it leave us hungry?

Legends Podcast #418; The Meg (Action)

August. When film studios bring in the final harvest of the crop sown in May, before the weather turns cold and cineplexes reap the whirlwind of horror and holiday movies. The dog days of summer, before the bitter chill of awards season sets in. And the last hurrah of big-budget popcorn cinema, the most mindless of all movies. What better way to celebrate the end of summer than with a shark movie? Based on Steve Alten’s best-selling novel, The Meg spent two decades in development hell while the Jurassic Park franchise went extinct and came back from extinction with a similarly-sized underwater beastie. Starring Jason “I’m what you’d call a champagne problem” Statham, The Meg scarfed up over half a billion dollars that the international box office last summer, much to the chagrin of my co-hosts. But is this shark tale worth taking the bait? Or does it stink like yesterday’s catch?

Legends Podcast #417; A Quiet Place (Horror)

Like 2017’s Get Out, last year’s breakout horror hit came from an actor-turned-first-time director best known for his comedic roles. John Krasinski - yes, Jim from The Office - directed and co-starred with his real-life wife Emily Blunt in a post-apocalyptic thriller set in a world where vicious monsters hurt and kill anything they… hear? A Quiet Place takes a very different approach to the traditionally scream-filled horror genre with a toned-down soundscape and only about 25 lines of spoken dialogue. The movie was an instant hit, grossing $340 million off a $20 million budget. But is A Quiet Place worth making noise over, or should we save our breath?

Legends Podcast #416; The Matrix (Legends of ‘99)

Twenty years ago, American cinemas were rocked by one of the best overall years in movie history. Now, Legends Podcast is celebrating the Legends of ‘99 all year long.

One of the most inventive films of 1999 came in the form of Warner Bros.’ kung fu/cyberpunk mash-up from two unknown directors, the Wachowskis. The Matrix, billed by producer Joel Silver as “the first movie of the 21st century,” was a box office phenomenon, debuting in first place, dropping to second, and then jumping back up to first place as word-of-mouth reviews spurred interest in the film. Blending science, philosophy, religion, and mysticism with hacker culture, anime, A.I. paranoia, and the hero’s journey narrative, The Matrix emerged as one of the most influential films of the year, resetting the paradigm for science fiction in a year when Star Wars was making its long-awaited (though ultimately disappointing) comeback. But twenty years on, is The Matrix still The One?

Legends Podcast #415; Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (Marvel)

Since 2002, there have been six live-action Spider-Man movies, with another on the way later this summer. Peter Parker has been played by three different actors, including the latest star, Tom Holland, who also appeared in Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War, bringing the total big-screen Spider-Man outings to an even eight. Add to this the dozen or so animated series, the live-action show from the ‘70s, twenty-odd video games, and the most expensive musical in Broadway history, and it’s hard to imagine that Hollywood would have anything new to say about the friendly neighborhood wall-crawler. Last year’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse proves that theory wrong.

Legends Podcast #414; Captain Marvel (Marvel)

Captain Marvel, the twenty-first installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, arrived in theaters earlier this month on International Women's Day. The long-awaited film, starring Brie Larson, was the first MCU outing toplined by a female character. Set in the 1990s as a prequel to the main storyline, Captain Marvel featured a de-aged performance by Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, as well as references that flesh out the backstory of the cinematic universe. Despite a troll campaign to derail the film via review bombing, Captain Marvel smashed expectations and scored a box office haul in the top ten opening weekends of all time. But does Captain Marvel earn “top gun” with our hosts, or is the film full of sound and Fury, but signifying nothing special?

Legends Podcast #413; Rushmore (Legends of ‘99)

For his sophomore effort, indie director Wes Anderson paired with his Bottle Rocket co-writer Owen Wilson to create Rushmore, a coming-of-age tale about a overachieving underachiever at an elite prep school, the wealthy alumnus he befriends, and the attractive teacher they both fall in love with. The film made the rounds on the festival circuit in 1998 and sold out showings at single theaters in New York and LA before going wide in ‘99 - okay, we’re cheating a little here, folks - winning the Independent Spirit award and launching Bill Murray into the second phase of his career. Capturing Anderson’s signature whimsical style and sporting a British Invasion-influenced soundtrack, Rushmore was a breakout hit that set up a remarkable run for its director over the next decade. But does the film deserve an honorable mention from our hosts? Or should it be expelled?

Legends Podcast #412; Alita: Battle Angel (Sci-Fi)

After spending nearly two decades in development hell, Alita: Battle Angel finally hit movie theaters last month. Based on the hit manga Gunnm (“Gun Dream”), which also spawned the anime Battle Angel Alita, the film was directed by Robert Rodriguez, co-written and produced by James Cameron, and boasted three Oscar-winning actors in supporting roles. Despite the film’s pedigree, Alita opened to underwhelming numbers at the domestic box office. Overseas, however, the film has fared better, becoming the third highest-grossing film to date in 2019. But does the film appeal to the better angels of our nature? Or is this a battle not worth fighting?

Legends Podcast #411; Office Space (Legends of ‘99)

Mike Judge ruled the ‘90s with his animated hits Beavis and Butt-Head and King of the Hill. For his first live-action project, Judge drew on his brief career at a Silicon Valley tech firm and his Milton animated shorts to create Office Space, a satire of white-collar workplace life. With an ensemble cast and a gangsta rap-infused soundtrack, Office Space spoke to Gen-Xers who found themselves caught up in the dot-com boom of the late nineties. Though the film, saddled with an odd promotional campaign, wound up getting downsized at the box office, like so many other films of the year, Office Space lived on as cult classic after repeated airings on Comedy Central and became one of Fox’s top-selling DVDs. But, twenty years later, does the film with the tagline “Work Sucks” still work? Or does it suck?

Spoiler Alert! Spoiler Alert! These discussions will be spoiler filled and may explicit language, so consider yourself warned.
