Legends Podcast #587; A Fish Called Wanda (Aug-Heist)

This week, we’re going abroad with a bunch of bumbling burglars in Britain in Charles Chricton;s 1988 caper. Starring John Cleese, Jamie Lee Curtis, Kevin Kline, and Michael Palin, this comedy won big at the box office and scored multiple awards, including a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for Kline. Following the aftermath of diamond robbery, the film tracks the multiple double-crosses, triple-crosses, and multiple canine assassinations as four crooks and one philandering lawyer try to claim the ill-gotten gains. But does one-third of Monty Python equate comedy gold? Join us we wanda if this limey-crimey filmy-wilmy pulls off the perfect crime as AugHeist just keeps swimming with A Fish Called Wanda!

Legends Podcast #586; Thief (Aug-Heist)

This week, we’re paying tribute to James Caan, who passed away last month at age 82, with his starring role in Michael Mann’s 1981 directorial debut. Co-starring Tuesday Weld, Willie Nelson and Robert Prosky, the film also features the big screen debuts of Dennis Farina, William Petersen and James Belushi. Mann brought in real-life professional thieves to consult on the film, which was co-produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and features a synth-heavy soundtrack by German electronica group Tangerine Dream. Playing a jewel thief and safecracker, James Caan often said that, next to The Godfather, this was the movie of which he was proudest. Now we’re tracking down the fifth alarm and stealing a peek at Thief to kick off Aug-Heist 2022!

Legends Podcast #585; The World’s End (Westworld Weekly Tie-In)

In 2013, director Edgar Wright concluded his Three Flavours Cornetto Trilogy, all co-written with Simon Pegg, produced by Nira Park, and starring Pegg and Nick Frost. Alternatively called the Blood and Ice Cream Trilogy, the first two films, Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, riffed on  zombie movies and the buddy cop genre. For the final entry in the trilogy, Wright and Pegg tackled sci-fi alien invasion flicks like Invasion of the Body Snatchers with a film centered on five high school mates reuniting for a pub crawl in their hometown. Also featuring Paddy Considine, Martin Freeman, Eddie Marsan, Rosamund Pike, and Pierce Brosnan, the film wraps up the trilogy’s themes of individualism vs. the collective and the dangers of perpetual adolescence. Now we’re bending our elbows and crossing over with Westworld Weekly to follow the boys from their first sip all the way to The World’s End. But in the sober light of day, is this movie good to the last drop?

Legends Podcast #584; Singin’ in the Rain (Musicals)

Seventy years ago, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer’s famed producer Arthur Freed, the force behind hits like The Wizard of Oz and Meet Me in St. Louis, released one of the most adored movie musicals of all time. Starring Gene Kelly (who co-choreograhped the film’s extensive tap numbers), Donald O’Connor, and Debbie Reynolds, the film is set at the dawn of “talkie” films and follows the trio through the reinvention of motion pictures. The film largely features songs from previous MGM musical films of the 1929–39 period, with only two original songs written specifically for the movie. The lavish musical was only a modest box office success for MGM, but - and I’m quoting directly from Wikipedia here - “it has since been accorded legendary status by contemporary critics, and is often regarded as the greatest musical film ever made and one of the greatest films ever made.” Now we’re donning our galoshes to watch Singin’ in the Rain and decide for ourselves if it deserves the praise… or fails to make a splash.

Legends Podcast #582; The Goonies (Eighties Movies)

In 1985, Steven Spielberg, Richard Donner, and Chris Columbus teamed up to make a movie: The Goonies. That’s it. That’s the intro.

The movie was, needless to say, a major hit, and a childhood-defining one for many ‘80s kids - but not Lobster! Starring Sean Astin, Corey Feldman, Josh Brolin, Jeff Cohen, Jonathan Ke Huy Quan, Kerri Green, Martha Plimpton, and John Matuszak, with Anne Ramsey, Robert Davi, and Joey Pants, the film was selected into the National Film Registry in 2017 for being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant,” and one of the many inspirations for Stranger Things. Now we’re joining the search for One-Eyed Willy’s buried treasure and staying one step ahead of the Fratelli crime family with The Goonies.

Legends Podcast #581; Fire Island (Pride Month)

It’s Pride Month and Legends Podcast is celebrating all colors of the cinematic rainbow with four films featuring LGBTQIA+ stories. This week, we’re capping off the month with a 2022 release set in the gay resort destsination Fire Island. Written by and starring Joel Kim Booster, the film was directed by Andrew Ahn and features a diverse cast including Bowen Yang, Conrad Ricamora, James Scully, and Margaret Cho. Originally pitched as a Quibi series (hashtag #QuibiSucks), the movie was picked up by Searchlight, released exclusively on Hulu, and is re-telling of Jane Austen’s classic romance Pride and Prejudice… emphasis on the “Pride.” But does this summer movie fire on all cylinders, or does it miss the ferry?

Legends Podcast #580; The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (Pride Month)

It’s Pride Month and Legends Podcast is celebrating all colors of the cinematic rainbow with four films featuring LGBTQIA+ stories. This week, we’re headed to the Land Down Under, where the wind does blow and men dress like sheilas in Stephan Elliott’s 1994 jukebox musical-slash-road comedy film. Starring Hugo Weaving, Guy Pearce, and Terrence Stamp, this movie was a box office hit, won the Oscar for Best Costume Design (werk!), and became an instant cult classic. It also served as the inspiration for a hit musical… and that musical was Mamma Mia. Just kidding, mates, it’s The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert… crikey! I was just having a laugh. But almost three decades later, is Priscilla still the queen of the screen, or is actually it kind of a drag?

It’s Pride Month and Legends Podcast is celebrating all colors of the cinematic rainbow with four films featuring LGBTQIA+ stories. Next up is Barry Jenkin’s 2016 look at black and queer masculinity throughout three phases of a young man’s life. The film was nominated for eight Academy Awards, with Mahershalla Ali making history as the first Muslim to win an Oscar (for Best Supporting Actor), but it almost missed its moment to celebrate its Best Picture Award after La La Land was mistakenly announced as the winner. Hold on, we’ve just been handled the correct envelope and can confirm that this week’s movie is Moonlight!

It’s Pride Month and Legends Podcast is celebrating all colors of the cinematic rainbow with four films featuring LGBTQIA+ stories. First up is a lesbian crime caper from 1996 that also happens to be the directorial debut of the Wachowski siblings. Starring Gina Gershon, Jennifer Tilly, and Joe Pantoliano, the film was a critical success and won several festival awards, but it failed to run away with the box office. Nevertheless, the film proved to studio financiers that the Wachowskis could make a movie, and their follow-up was The Matrix. Now it’s time to grab the remote and turn up the volume to figure out what the hell Jennifer Tilly is saying in Bound!

Legends Podcast #577; Spider-Man (20th Anniversary)

Twenty years ago, Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man swung onto the big screen for the first time. A cinematic version of one of Marvel Comics' most prominent heroes had been in development since the '80s, with names like James Cameron attached. Sony ended up with the rights and developed a movie with Darkman director Sam Raimi and Jurassic Park screenwriter David Koepp. Starring Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker, the film was a smash hit, taking in the biggest box office opening of all-time (at that time) and becoming the highest-grossing film of the year. It spawned two sequels and a whole Spider-Verse of future films… and memes. You know, I'm something of a podcaster myself, so let's talk about 2002's Spider-Man.

Before Top Gun: Maverick jets onto movie screens this weekend after a two-year delay, we’re rewatching the original blockbuster that earned Tom Cruise his action hero wings. Co-starring Kelly McGillis, Anthony Edwards, Val Kilmer, and Tom Skerrit, it was the highest-grossing movie of 1986 and drove a 40% increase in sales of Bomber jackets and Ray-Ban aviator sunglasses after its release. Now we’re taking a ride into the DANGER ZONE to talk Top Gun - but does it still take our breath away, or is it just a glorified recruiting ad for flight school?

Legends Podcast #575; The Last Blockbuster (Documentaries)

Imagine if podcasting had existed 20 years ago, before streaming video was readily available. If all three of us wanted to watch the same movie at home on the same day, unless it was on TV, we’d have to go to the video store. Most likely, it would have been a Blockbuster Video, the world’s largest chain of home video rental establishments. We’d have to leave our homes, get in our vehicles, drive across town, go in a store, and find the movie on a shelf (if they had it) and then pay to take home and watch it. If you found yourself pining for the bygone era of Blockbuster Video stores, have we got the documentary for you. The Last Blockbuster rewinds to the rise of the VCR age and tracks the only chain’s remaining store in existence, located in Bend, Oregon. And guess what? It’s on Netflix!

Legends Podcast #574; CODA (Oscar Winners)

This year’s Academy Awards ceremony was nothing if not surprising. You could even call it, if you will, an about-face that rocked the Oscars, where the most powerful statement was made not with words, but with hands. I’m referring, of course, to Troy Kotsur’s acceptance of Best Supporting Actor as the first Deaf man to win an Oscar. Director Siân Heder’s film about a child of deaf adults, her family, and her love of music also took home the statues for Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay. The Apple TV+ produced film also made history as the first movie from a streaming service to win Best Picture. Now we’re talking CODA, and we don’t care who hears us!

Legends Podcast #573; The Blues Brothers (Musicals)

Director John Landis and actor John Belushi had already made a hit film together - 1978's National Lampoon's Animal House - when they teamed up with Dan Ackroyd to make movie based on Belushi and Ackroyd's Saturday Night Live characters. The resulting film was one of the most expensive comedies ever made, with cost overruns (including a de facto budget line for cocaine) attributed to Belushi's behavior. The film also features well-known musical artists like Aretha Franklin and Ray Charles, shot-on-location Chicagoland scenery, and the most automobiles ever destroyed in the production of a motion picture. We've got 56 minutes of podcasting to go, we've got three hosts, it's dark, and this is The Blues Brothers. Hit it!

Legends Podcast #572; The Batman (Comic Book Movies)

We’re back with another take on DC’s Comics’ Caper Crusader. This time, Dawn of the Rise of the War for the Planet of the Apes director Matt Reeves offers his film noir spin on the World’s Greatest Detective, starring Robert “Robbat Battinson” Pattinson as a youngish Bruce Wayne in his second year beneath the cowl. Also starring Zoë Kravitz as Selina Kyle, Jeffery Wright as Jim Gordon, Andy Serkis as Alfred, Paul Dano as the Riddler, and an unrecognizable Colin Farrel as the Penguin, this Bat-flick’s Bat-running-time is almost 3 hours. Luckily, it’s now on HBO Max so we can just hit pause when we need to empty our Bat-bladders. There are Legends and there are THE Legends, so let’s see if The Batman truly is the definitive article.

Among the nominees for Best Picture at last month’s Academy Awards was director Guillermo Del Toro’s follow-up to his 2017 Oscar winner The Shape of Water. Starring Bradley Cooper as a down-on-his-luck carnie with a mysterious past, this remake of the 1947 film noir also stars Cate Blanchett, Willem Dafoe, Toni Collette, Rooney Mara, and David Strathairn, with Del Toro regulars Ron Perlman and Richard Jenkins rounding out the cast. The film didn’t win any Oscars, but production designer Tamara Deverell did take home the Art Directors Guild award for Period Feature Drama. Legends Podcast #570; Death on the Nile (Murder Mystery)

Director Kenneth Brannagh released two films in 2021. One of them was nominated for seven Academy Awards, seven Golden Globes, and six BAFTAs - winning Best Original Screenplay, Best Screenplay, and Outstanding British Film, respectively. The other one is Death on the Nile. Brannagh’s second turn in front of and behind the camera as Agatha Christie’s inimitable sleuth Hercule Poirot sees him back on the case in Egypt. A wealthy wedding party featuring an heiress, a con man, some lesbians, Russell Brand, a jazz singer, and a jilted fiance naturally results in murder - but when everyone has motive and opportunity, what’s a Belgian to do? The film’s release was battered by production issues, the pandemic, and controversy surrounding leading man Armie Hammer, but is the mystery good enough to keep this ship afloat?

Legends Podcast #569; Last Night in Soho (Thrillers)

The swingin’ Sixties have long been Hollywood’s playground. Most films romanticize the era’s free spirits and even freer sexual attitudes in a time of social change and historical upheaval. While recent nostalgia trips like Once Upon a Time in Hollywood hint at but ultimately gloss over the era’s darker side, Edgar Wright’s latest film pulls no punches in showing that some things are better left in the past. Co-written by Krysty Wilson-Cairns and starring Thomasin Mackenzie and Anya Taylor-Joy, the film also features Matt Smith, Terrence Stamp, and Dame Diana Rigg in her final film role. Now we’re picking up our trusty scissors and reminiscing about Last Night in Soho.

Legends Podcast #568; Lake Placid (RIP Betty White)

Betty White’s film and television career spanned seven decades and was filled with reinvention. From radio actress to game show staple, from a Golden Girl to being Hot in Cleveland, she never failed to leave us laughing. In 1999, she played a foul-mouthed pensioner with a penchant for reptiles in a creature-feature from Fox and Stan Winston Studios. Co-starring Bill Pullman, Bridget Fonda, Oliver Platt and Brendan Gleeson, written by Ally McBeal creator David E. Kelley, and directed by horror helmer Steve Miner, the movie didn’t exactly take a chunk out of the box office but it kept its head above water long enough to earn five low-budget made-for-TV sequels. See you later, alligator, this ain’t the Nile, crocodile… it’s Lake Placid!

Legends Podcast #567; The Godfather (50th Anniversary)

Fifty years ago, Francis Ford Coppola’s adaptation of Mario Puzo’s bestselling novel premiered in movie theaters to near-universal acclaim, spent twenty-three consecutive weeks at number one at box office, and became the highest-grossing movie of all-time. Starring Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, James Caan, and Robert Duvall, the film won the Oscars for Best Picture, Adapted Screenplay, and Best Actor for Brando - which he refused to accept. In the years since, it became the first chapter of a trilogy and has been named by the American Film Institute as the second-greatest film in American cinema. If you haven’t figured it out by now, Legends Podcast is ready to make you an offer you can’t refuse. It’s The Godfather.

Legends Podcast #566; 8 Mile (Musicals)

Twenty years ago, Eminem was one of the most successful - and divisive - recording artists in the world. He was a white rapper from the poor suburbs of Detroit whose meteoric rise to fame was perhaps only eclipsed by his ability to cause controversy with his lyrics. Director Curtis Hanson (The Hand that Rocks the Cradle, L.A. Confidential) and screenwriter Scott Silver (Joker) created a movie based on Eminem’s true-life beginnings, starring the rapper as himself. Co-starring Kim Basinger, Michael Shannon, Mekhi Phifer, Brittany Murphy and Anthony Mackie, the movie also launched the Academy Award-winning single “Lose Yourself.” Now sit down with Legends Podcast as we enjoy a fresh plate of mom’s spaghetti with 8 Mile.

Legends Podcast #565; The King’s Man (Action Movies)

Director Matthew Vaughn’s series of Kingman films, based on the comic book by Mark Millar and Dave Gibbons, focus on a secret British intelligence agency. A prequel, also directed by Vaughn, telling the origin story of the Kingsman during The Great War, was released last year after being delayed eight times by production issues and the pandemic. With an all-star cast and the series’ signature hyper-fashionable - and hyper-violent - style, does The King’s Man prove to be worth the wait? Or, given current events, is it just in time to see history repeat itself?

Legends Podcast #564; Free Guy (Video Game Movies)

Canadian treasure Ryan Reynolds has gone from rom-com star to failed DC superhero to successful Marvel anti-hero, as well as doing action movies with The Rock and playing a Pokemon. He returned to the video game genre with his most recent film, playing a non-player character in an online video game who levels up to save his virtual world. With cameos and pop culture references galore, this film by Shawn Levy also stars Killing Eve’s Jodie Comer, Stranger Things’ Joe Keery, and New Zealand’s Taika Waititi - who has definitely never, ever been in a movie with Ryan Reynolds before. The movie was also the 10th highest-grossing domestic film of 2021, and now Legends Podcast is livestreaming on Twitch while we talk Free Guy! (Just kidding, we are not.)

Legends Podcast #563; The Harder They Fall (Action Movies)

Director Jeymes Samuel’s debut film brings together the all-stars of the American Wild West - Nat Love, Rufus Buck, Marshall Bass Reeves, “Stagecoach” Mary Fields, and “Treacherous” Trudy Smith, among others - all real-life historical figures, and all of them black - in a team-up movie for Netflix. And befitting an Avengers-style Western, Samuel assembled an all-star cast including Jonthan Majors, Idris Elba, Delroy Lindo, Zazie Beetz, and Regina King to bring these figures to life. Big stars to fill big cowboy boots - but as the saying goes, the bigger they are… The Harder They Fall!

Legends Podcast #562; The Warriors (Action Movies)

Director Walter Hill’s third movie adapted source material based on Greek history following an army of soldiers on a long march home across hostile territory. In this case, the soldiers are a group of street toughs making their way  across a 1970s New York City populated by colorful gangs. When the film was released, it was accompanied by an outbreak of violence linked to its screenings, including three deaths, prompting Paramount Pictures to pull advertising and pay for additional theater security. Nevertheless, the film was a success and went on to inspire comic book and video game adaptations over the years. Now we’re hopping the turnstile for that long subway ride from the Bronx to Coney Island with The Warriors. Legends… come out to pla-a-ay!

Legends Podcast #561; Big Trouble in Little China (Action Movies)

Director John Carpenter always wanted to make a martial-arts movie. He got his chance with his eighth feature film - and his third time teaming up with actor Kurt Russell  - an action-comedy set in the mythical and murky underworld of San Francisco’s Chinatown. Fox rushed the movie through production and release to avoid competing with a similar-themed Eddie Murphy vehicle, The Golden Child, leaving little time for marketing the movie against its real competition: James Cameron’s hotly anticipated Aliens, which opened two weeks later. The end result was a movie that bombed in theaters but went on to enjoy a long life on home video and cable TV as a cult classic. Now Beef and Lobster are climbing about the Pork Chop Express for Big Trouble in Little China!

Legends Podcast #560; Nobody (Action Movies)

The creator of John Wick and director of Hardcore Henry teamed up to create an action-comedy movie starring Better Call Saul actor Bob Odenkirk. What more do you need to know, buddy? Originally postponed by the pandemic, the film was released in theaters in March ‘21 with a PVOD release a month later. It turns out that nobody asks the hard questions like Nobody - and that question is, specifically: "Where's my kitty cat bracelet?!"

Legends Podcast #559; Moulin Rouge! (Musicals)

Director Baz Luhrman’s theater-themed “Red Curtain” trilogy drew to a close in 2001 with the follow-up to his breakout hit Romeo + Juliet. As with Baz’s take on The Bard, this film was filled with anachronism. It was a jukebox musical that fused cabaret, Broadway, vaudeville, and Bollywood. It was a lavish period piece set in turn-of-the-century bohemian Paris to the songs of the MTV Generation. And it was a hit, grossing almost $180 million and earning eight Oscar nominations. It’s hip-hop single, “Lady Marmalade” was a chart-topping hit, and the Broadway musical version of the film just won the Tony Award last year. Voulez-vous écouter notre podcast as we discuss Moulin Rouge!

Legends Podcast #558; A History of Violence (Comic Book Movies)

Director David Cronenberg is best known for mind-bending body horror in films like Scanners, Videodrome, and The Fly, but he made his first “comic book movie” in 2005, an Academy Award-nominated adaptation of a graphic novel - and we do mean graphic. Starring Viggo Mortensen as a small-town diner owner whose mobster past catches up with him, the film was a modest success both financially and critically, and led to a series of collaborations between the actor and director, including Eastern Promises and A Dangerous Method. Now, we’re watching the last major Hollywood movie to be released on VHS, which makes it historical - A History of Violence.

Legends Podcast #557; The Matrix Resurrections (Sci-Fi)

The Matrix Trilogy redefined action movies, but by the third film in the franchise it had begun to topple under its own weight. The film’s creators, the Wachowskis, seemed to recognize this and went on to other projects, forswearing any future sequels. However, based on the profitability of the franchise, rumors of a reboot persisted, either with or without the creators’ involvement. And so a fourth Matrix movie became like the Matrix itself - no one can be told that it exists, you have to see it for yourself. In the end, Lana Wachowski returned to bring Neo and Trinity back to life, with Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Ann Moss reprising their roles. Now we’re returning to broadcast depth and hacking into The Matrix Resurrections!

Legends Podcast #556; Romancing the Stone (Adventure)

Robert Zemeckis was an unemployed movie director at the start of the 1980s, but by the end of the decade he was one of the most successful blockbuster directors with films like Back to the Future and Who Framed Roger Rabbit? under his belt. He got his big break from Michael Douglas, who hired Zemeckis to direct an action-adventure romantic comedy film starring Douglas and Kathleen Turner. The movie seemed destined to flop; a rough cut screening for 20th Century Fox execs led to Zemeckis being fired from Cocoon, his next scheduled project for the studio. Upon its release, however, the film turned out to be a sleeper hit and was Fox’s only box office success that year. Now we’re grabbing a vine and swinging into 2022 with Romancing the Stone!

Legends Podcast #555; 8-Bit Christmas (New X-Mas Classic?)

Bob Clark’s 1983 film A Christmas Story has become a holiday classic, but for most kids born in the ‘80s, a Red Ryder BB gun was not at the top of their wish lists. We wanted something a little more high-tech - the Nintendo Entertainment System. HBO Max’s latest original film, from Goon director Michael Dowse and novelist Kevin Jakubowski, updates this age-old tale for the millennial crowd, with hefty chunks of The Goonies, Home Alone, and The Princess Bride thrown in to make sure that no nostalgic stone is left unturned. Now we’re blowing on our cartridges and booting up 8-Bit Christmas for our last movie review of 2021!

The Christmas rom-com movie genre got a much-needed update in 2020 from Hulu with the release of Clea DuVall’s semi-autobiographical coming-out comedy-of-Yuletide-errors. Filmed earlier that year just prior to the Covid shutdown, the Pittsburgh-shot holiday flick starred Kristen Stewart and Mackenzie Davis as the lead couple. Aubrey Plaza, Alison Brie, Mary Holland, Dan Levy, Mary Steenburgen and Victor Garber round out the cast of the GLAAD Media Award winning film. Now we’re donning our gay apparel and enjoying Happiest Season to decide if it’s a new Christmas classic.

Legends Podcast #553; Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring (20th Anniversary)

J.R.R. Tolkien’s massively popular fantasy epic, The Lord of the Rings, was long thought to be unfilmable due to the size and scope of the story and the technology limitations of the times. Kiwi director Peter Jackson proved them all wrong by shooting all three movies back-to-back in sixteen months at 150 locations and soundstages across New Zealand to the tune of $280 million. The films collectively brought in almost three billion dollars worldwide, winning 17 Oscars, becoming one of the greatest film series ever made. In celebration of the twentieth anniversary of its release, we’re joining the quest to return some jewelry with The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring!

Director Joe Carnahan has given us intense action before in films like Smokin’ Aces and The Grey, but he takes it to the next level in this 2021 Hulu original film. The stars of Star Trek: The Next Generation made the jump to the big screen with Star Trek: Generations, though they were somewhat overshadowed by William Shatner’s Captain Kirk - good thing they killed him off! For their first “stand-alone” feature film, Captain Picard and crew faced off against their biggest threat - the Borg - as they travelled back in time to ensure that one small warp flight for man equaled one giant leap towards Kirk’s first officer. Star Trek: First Contact premiered 25 years ago, but it won’t happen for another 41 years, 4 months, and 13 days… This is Chronovember!

Legends Podcast #549; 12 Monkeys (Chronovember)

We’re celebrating the return of our time travel theme month with the return of director Terry Gilliam, who last appeared during Chronovember with his 1981 film Time Bandits. This time around, we’ve got Bruce Willis acting against type as a stoic inmate sent back in time to discover the source of an apocalyptic  virus and Brad Pitt acting against type as the motor-mouthed mental patient who may or may not be the cause of the apocalypse. Along the way, Madeleine Stowe, Christopher Plummer, and David Morse play supporting roles in a film that pairs Gilliam’s signature madcap style with one of the darker endings in film history. We all know the metaphor about simians and word processors, but does 12 Monkeys equal one good movie?

Legends Podcast is pressing pause on Chronovember to talk about Denis Villenueve’s latest visually stunning reimagining of a beloved Eighties classic film based on long-thought-to-be-unfilmable sci-fi text! Frank Herbert’s 1965 novel was a groundbreaking achievement in the genre, but David Lynch’s 1984 film adaptation was a commercial and critical failure. With Villenueve’s film getting a simultaneous release in the theaters and on HBO Max, as well as only tackling the first half of Herbert's novel, what will we make of this latest attempt to tell the story of Paul Muad’Dib, the worms, and the spice? God created Arrakis to train the faithful, and He created Legends Podcast to review DUNE!

Legends Podcast #544; Halloween (Legends of Halloween)

We’re kicking off Legends of Halloween with… well, Halloween! John Carpenter’s 1978 film starring Jamie Lee Curtis ushered in the classic era of American slasher films. With the 12th movie in the franchise coming out later this month, once again starring Curtis, it’s easy to forget that the original was an independent film, made on the cheap for just over a quarter million dollars. Co-written by Debra Hill, Halloween cemented Carpenter’s status as a blockbuster director, launched the career of yogurt enthusiast Jamie Lee Curtis, and introduced the world to the unstoppable kitchen knife-wielding boogeyman Michael Myers.

One year after their successful reboot of Mission: Impossible, Paramount Pictures went back to the well of classic ‘60s TV action series with The Saint starring Val Kilmer and Elizabeth Shue. Based on the best-selling book series by Leslie Charteris, international super-thief Simon Templar has been played by nearly a dozen actors, including Vincent Price and Roger Moore, with Regé-Jean Page set to don the halo in an upcoming film. The 1997 film was a box office and home video hit, but it failed to impress critics. Now we’re saying “Halo” to The Saint.

Legends Podcast #542; The Rocketeer (Comic Book Movies)

In 1991, Walt Disney Pictures released a live-action comic book movie - decades before their Marvel films - based on the 1980s graphic novel The Rocketeer by Dave Stevens. Itself an homage to 1920s and ‘30s action serials, Disney hoped to jumpstart their own Indiana Jones-style franchise based on the high-flying adventurer. The film starred a relative unknown, Billy Campbell, in the lead role, and it also featured Jennifer Connelly as the love interest, Alan Arkin as the mentor, and two-time James Bond actor Timothy Dalton as the bad guy. Although director Joe Johnston, who later returned to comic book period action movies two decades later with Captain America: The First Avenger, brought a surprisingly comic-accurate Rocketeer to the big screen, the film was not a major hit and Disney scrapped plans for a sequel. But with a reboot from Disney+ on the way, we’re strapping on our jetpacks and taking to the skies over Hollywoodland!

Legends Podcast #540; Fast Five (Aug-Heist)

The “Fast and Furious” franchise was firing on all cylinders in 2011 when it released its fifth installment. Far from the Point Break redux of ten years before, the films had evolved from their street race-centric origins through a series of side-quels, only really getting around to a proper follow-up to the first film by the fourth overall outing. In the hands of director Justin Lin, the series truly found its footing by ignoring the laws of physics and focusing on what is most important: family. This Rio-set heist flick reset the series, united the casts of multiple F&F movies, and threw The Rock into the mix for good measure. Now we’re extending AugHeist into September with our fifth movie and that makes it Fast Five!

Starring Channing Tatum and Adam Driver as two possibly-cursed brothers who plan to rob a NASCAR race, this down-and-dirty heist flick rounds out its cast with a Southern-drawl sporting Daniel Craig, two years ahead of his turn as the detective in Knives Out. While the film didn’t exactly make off with the box office, it did convince Soderbergh to keep making movies after he announced his retirement from directing in 2013. Now we’re finishing out the month with the charmingly scruffy Logan Lucky.

Legends Podcast #538; Ocean’s Eleven (Aug-Heist)

This week, we’re betting on the 2001 remake of the 1960 Rat Pack classic Ocean’s 11 to deliver some solid Aug-Heist fun. Directed by Stephen Soderbergh and starring George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Andy Garcia, Julia Roberts and more, the film scored at the box office and won two sequels and a spin-off. Numerically speaking, the film was the fifth highest-grossing movie of the year, with a worldwide gross of $450 million. Now we’re putting our cards on the table and going all in on Ocean’s Eleven!

Legends Podcast #537; Mission: Impossible (Aug-Heist)

This week, we’re celebrating the 25th anniversary of the movie reboot of the classic television series Mission: Impossible. Starring Tom Cruise as secret agent Ethan Hunt of the Impossible Mission Force, this Brian De Palma-directed film scored the third-biggest box office haul of 1996. Cruise returned as Hunt for five more films, with two more on the way, making him the longest-running actor to play a big screen superspy - more than Bond, more than Bourne. Now we’re booting up our floppy disks and scrolling Usenet groups for Mission: Impossible!

Legends Podcast #536; Locked Down (Aug-Heist)

This week, we’re going back to the early days of the Coronavirus lockdown, which posed an interesting problem to filmmakers. How do you make a movie during a deadly pandemic when everyone is supposed to stay at home? While many productions were put on hold, writer Steven Knight took a dare and wrote the script, and director Doug Liman shot it in 18 days with an all-star cast. The result was Locked Down, a relationship comedy-drama starring Anne Hathaway and Chiwetel Ejiofer, which also happens to be about stealing a very expensive diamond. The film was released direct to HBO Max this past January, and now we’re taking the opportunity that fate has given us and unlocking Aug-Heist 2021!

Legends Podcast #535; Snakes on a Plane (Action Movies)

Fifteen years ago, a would-be summer blockbuster became an early example of a viral internet hit after the film’s title was announced. Starring the already meme-worthy actor Samuel L. Jackson as an FBI agent tasked with protecting a witness on a flight from Hawaii to LAX, only to find the flight besieged by venomous serpents, the film’s online notoriety did not translate to box office success I.R.L. Nevertheless, the film opened the floodgates for a torrent of high-concept action flicks of varying degrees of quality - Sharknado, anyone? We’re putting up our seats and tray tables, dosing ourselves with antivenom, and watching Snakes on a Plane!

Legends Podcast #534; The Mummy Returns (Action Movies)

The 2001 sequel to 1999’s hit monster flick The Mummy saw director Stephen Sommers helm another Indiana Jones-inspired adventure through cursed tombs infested with creepy bugs. Joining Brendan Fraser, Rachel Weisz, Arnold Vosloo, and the rest of the first film’s cast was a professional wrestler and untested actor known only as “The Rock.” The film was another box office hit, delivering the biggest opening weekend in two years. Though it would prove to be the last film starring the original cast, the following year The Rock starred in a spin-off prequel based on his character, The Scorpion King, earning the biggest salary ever for an actor in their first lead role and launching his movie career in earnest. Now, Beef, Wing, and Lobster are opening the Book of the Dead and bringing back The Mummy Returns for its twentieth anniversary!

Forty years ago, director John Carpenter followed his hit horror film Halloween with an action movie set in a year far off in the future: 1997! Starring Kurt Russell in his iconic role as the eye patch-wearing former soldier Snake Plissken tasked with a mission to save the President from the island prison of Manhattan in return for a federal pardon, the film was a hit and became a cult classic. While Lobster’s on vacation in the Empire State, Beef, Wing, and Taco will bravely attempt to Escape from New York!

Legends Podcast #532; The Cannonball Run (Car Movies)

Fifty years ago, automotive journalist Brock Yates and Car and Driver editor Steve Smith conceived the Cannonball Baker Sea-To-Shining-Sea Memorial Trophy Dash, a timed race from East Coast to West Coast of America. The first “Cannonball Run” from New York City to the Portofino Inn in Redondo Beach, California, was covered in a widely-read article, and the race was run four more times throughout the ‘70s. By the end of the decade, a movie was in the works, to be written by Yates and helmed by stuntdriver-turned-director Hal Needham. Two 1976 films - Cannonball and The Gumball Rally - beat Yates’ and Needham’s film to the screen, but their 1981 film - which boasted Burt Reynolds, Dom DeLuise, and Farrah Fawcett leading a stacked cast - became the sixth highest-grossing film of the year and remains an enduring classic. Now, forty years later, we’re putting pedal to metal and checking out The Cannonball Run!

Legends Podcast #531; Twister (Action Movies)

Twenty-five years ago, Speed director Jan du Bont’s latest action movie blew into theaters. Starring Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton as a pair of estranged tornado chasers, the film was co-written by Jurassic Park author Michael Chricton and produced by Stephen Spielberg and Kathleen Kennedy. While the screenplay went through several rewrites from script doctors like Joss Whedon, Steve Zallian, and Jeff Nathanson, shooting was also plagued with on-set injuries, budget overruns, and outbursts from the volatile du Bont. Despite the stormy production, it became the second-highest grossing film of the year and made history as the first film to be released on DVD in the United States. Now we’re grabbing as many aluminum cans as we can find and watching the best Dodge Ram commercial ever made - Twister!

Legends Podcast #530; Tread (Documentary)

On June 4th, 2004, disgruntled Granby, Colorado, resident Marvin Heemeyer drove his secretly-built “Killdozer” through the wall of his garage and took it on a destructive rampage of vengeance against his fellow townspeople, who he believed had wronged him over the years. At the end of the day, Heemeyer had destroyed 13 buildings, including the town hall, the local newspaper’s offices, several local businesses, and the home of the former mayor, causing over $7 million worth of damage. Miraculously, no one was killed, save for Heemeyer, who took his own life inside the cab of his homemade tank. In 2020, Netflix released a documentary about Heemeyer’s life and that fateful day in Granby, and now Beef and Lobster are here to review the shocking true story of Tread!

Legends Podcast #529; Raiders of the Lost Ark (40th Anniversary)

Forty years ago, Indiana Jones swung onto movie theater screens with his first epic adventure hot on the heels of some nasty Nazis in search of the Ark of the Covenant. Created by George Lucas and Philip Kaufman, and brought to life by screenwriter Lawrence Kasdan, producer Frank Marshall, and director Stephen Spielberg. The film also featured a score by John Williams, cinematography by Douglas Slocombe, editing by Michael Kahn, and starred Harrison Ford in the title role as archaeologist/adventurer/college professor Dr. Henry “Indiana” Jones, Jr. While the film spawned a major franchise, it was a success in it’s own right, becoming the highest-grossing film of the year and winning five Oscars. We’ve got our three top men on the podcast this week - top men - to review Raiders of the Lost Ark!

Legends Podcast #528; Excalibur (40th Anniversary)

Forty years ago, King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table got the blockbuster treatment with John Boorman’s 1981 production retelling the classic tales. Starring Nigel Terry as Arthur and Nicol Williamson as Merlin, the film also features Gabriel Byrne, Helen Mirren, Patrick Stewart, Liam Neeson, and Ciarán Hinds in some of their earliest film roles. Shot entirely on location in Ireland, the movie boasts a dazzling production design, elaborate (and shiny) costumes, and music from Carl Orff, whose “O Fortuna” from the cantata Carmina Burana was used in the film’s trailer. Now Legends Podcast meets Arthurian Legend with Excalibur!

Legends Podcast #527; The Mitchells vs. The Machines (Animated Movies)

Phil Lord and Chris Miller, who produced the Academy Award-winning (and Legends fan favorite) animated film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, teamed up with director Mike Rianda on a family road trip movie about the end of the world for Sony Pictures Animation. Originally called Connected, the movie was scheduled for a 2020 release that was cancelled due to the pandemic. Netflix picked up the movie’s distribution rights for a cool $110 million, the film was retitled to Rianda’s original name, and it was released on streaming on April 30th, 2021. Now we’re kicking off summer road trip season (after a near-apocalyptic year and a half) with The Mitchells vs. The Machines!

Based on Jessica Bruder’s non-fiction book exploring the lives of van-dwelling transient Americans in the wake of the Great Recession, the film features many of the real-life people from the book playing fictionalized versions of themselves. The film took home the Best Picture statue as well as earning McDormand her third Oscar for Best Actress. Now we’re hitting the road to live the van life with Nomadland!

Legends Podcast #525; Without Remorse (Action Movies)

Author Tom Clancy ruled the ‘80s and ‘90s with his military espionage thrillers, starting with 1984’s The Hunt for Red October, producing seventeen bestsellers and selling over 100 million copies in his lifetime, and spawning multiple motion pictures. His most famous character, CIA analyst Jack Ryan, has been played by Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford, Ben Affleck, and Chris Pine. Most recently, John Krasinski has stepped into the role for Amazon’s original TV series, Jack Ryan. Clancy’s character John Clark, a darker, more action-oriented counterpoint to Jack Ryan, is another long-running fan favorite, more notably through the Rainbow Six novels and video game series. Paramount was set to launch Clark’s origin story onto the big screen before the pandemic deep-sixed plans for a theatrical release. Amazon saw an opportunity for a bit of brand synergy and snapped up the release rights for the action movie starring Michael B. Jordan. We’re checking out the latest blockbuster forced to go directly to streaming, and we’re not even sorry about it. You might say that we’re completely… Without Remorse!

Legends Podcast #524; Another Round (Oscar Winners)

Danish director Thomas Vinterberg, perhap best known for co-founding the Dogme 95 filmmaking movement with fellow director Lars von Trier, is also famous for his intensely intimate character studies within ensemble casts. His latest film follows that trend, with Mads Mikkelsen, Thomas Bo Larsen, Magnus Millang, and Lars Ranthe starring as four high school teachers who decide to get perpetually buzzed during their daily lives… for science! Called “Druk” - slang for “binge drinking” - in Danish, the film received global critical praise, winning the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film and earning Vinterberg a nomination for Best Director. This week, we’re heading to the bar and ordering up Another Round!

Legends Podcast #523; Mortal Kombat 2021 (Video Game Movies)

This player-versus-player video game hit arcades almost thirty years ago, and it quickly became infamous for its graphic violence, including bloody signature kill moves called Fatalities. While it’s gotten the big screen treatment before, most notably in Paul W.S. Anderson’s 1995 film, it’s never earned the R-rating that the franchise deserves. The new film, released last month in theaters and on HBO Max, chooses that destiny with gory Fatalities galore - but does it live up to the expectations of our three hosts? We test our might with... Mortal Kombat!

Legends Podcast #522; The Boys in the Band (Gaypril)

Playwright Mart Crowley’s The Boys in the Band opened in 1968 as an Off-Broadway production with a limited engagement - just five curtain calls. However, the show’s popularity led to a change in venue to a larger theater where it ran for 1,001 performances from April of ‘68 to 1970. In 1970, William Friedkin directed the original cast in a film version from a script by Crowley, which made waves as the first mainstream film to use the “C” Word. In 2018, a Tony Award-winning Broadway revival opened for the play’s 50th anniversary, with Jim Parsons, Matt Bomer and Zachary Quinto leading a cast of all out  gay actors. In 2020, Netflix released the Ryan Murphy-produced film version of the revived play with that cast - which won the 2021 GLAAD Media Award for Limited Release Film. Legends Podcast is spending the whole month exploring gay and lesbian cinema in what we’re calling Gaypril, and we’re wrapping up the month with The Boys in the Band!

Legends Podcast #521; But I’m a Cheerleader (Gaypril)

Director Jamie Babbit made her feature debut in 1999 after she found success at Sundance with her short film Sleeping Beauties. Starring Natasha Lyonne as a high school cheerleader sent to conversion therapy camp, the film also features Clea DuVall and Melanie Lynskey as her fellow lesbian campers, along with Cathy Moriarty and RuPaul as the staff in the pink and blue John Waters-esque dreamscape of the True Directions camp. The film earned an initial rating of NC-17 from the MPAA, as did American Pie, the other 1999 sex comedy that featured Lyonne. But while the film where a guy has sexual relations with his dessert went on to spawn multiple sequels, this subversive yet sweet take-down of homophobic sterotypes remains relatively obscure. Legends Podcast is spending the whole month exploring gay and lesbian cinema in what we’re calling Gaypril. We’re all podcasters here - But I’m a Cheerleader - is the name of the movie!

Director Ang Lee had already achieved international success when he took the helm of an adaptation of Annie Proulx’s short story that was co-written by Lonesome Dove author Larry McMurty. Starring Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal as two cowboys who carry on a decades-long love affair that began on the titular mountain in 1963, the film was a critical and commercial success, winning multiple awards including top honors at the Golden Globes and the BAFTAs. At the Academy Awards, it famously lost the Best Picture Oscar to Crash in one of the most controversial upsets in recent years. Director Peter Jackson rose to prominence directing horror-comedies, but it was his 1994 film Heavenly Creatures that earned him international recognition and his first Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay with his partner, Fran Walsh. Retelling the infamous Parker-Hulme murder case in Christchurch, New Zealand, forty years prior, the film introduced Kate Winslet and Melanie Lynskey to the screen and featured immeresive fantasy elements that foreshadow Jackson’s work on the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Legends Podcast #518; Zack Snyder’s Justice League

Four years after its original release, the fifth film of the DCEU is back on screens courtesy of HBO Max. Zack Snyder’s Justice League, however, presents an almost entirely different vision from Joss Whedon’s theatrical version, and is the direct result of the unholy alliance between a troubled production, a rabid fanbase, and a streaming service hungry for buzz-worthy content. Adding $70 million to the original film’s $300 million budget for all-new visual effects and new footage - as well as the restoration of Henry Cavill’s upper lip - and clocking in at over four hours, the “Snyder Cut'’ is certainly more… but is it better?

Legends Podcast #517; Last Action Hero (Arnold)

The career of action hero Arnold Schwarzenegger is full of hits, but 1993 handed him his first major flop. Following his career-defining performance in Terminator 2: Judgement Day, the John McTiernan-directed spoof Last Action Hero saw Arnie play a fictional movie character from an action sequel starring… Arnold Schwarzeneggar. Opening in June of 1993, Last Action Hero was billed as "the next great summer action movie," but bad word-of-mouth from a disastrous test screening destroyed any chance the film had of standing up to the competition. The fact that the competition was Steven Spielberg’s Jurassic Park, which came out the weekend before Last Action Hero and would go on to become the highest-grossing film of all time at that point... Well, it almost made Arnold’s action career extinct. But twenty-eight years later, Last Action Hero seems ahead of its time, and it may just be one of the best comedies Arnold ever made.

After facing a career downturn and seeing his personal life turn to tabloid fodder, Ben Affleck solidified his status as an actor-director with his sophomore outing, 2010’s The Town. Starring Affleck, Rebecca Hall, Jeremy Renner, Jon Hamm, and Pete Postelwaite in his final film role, The Town followed up the first pic Affleck helmed, 2007’s Gone Baby Gone, as another Boston-based crime drama. The Town received overwhelmingly positive reviews and a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nom for Renner, and Affleck’s next film, Argo, would win him the Oscar for Best Picture. Legends Podcast #515; Lockout (Sci-Fi)

In 2012, the French sci-fi action film Lockout asked the question: what if Luc Besson ripped off John Carpenter’s Escape from New York? When a convicted ex-soldier is asked to infiltrate a floating maximum-security prison to rescue a member of the First Family in order to receive a pardon, hijinks ensue. Starring Guy Pearce as Snake - er, um, “Snow,” - Lockout was panned by critics as “Escape from N.Y./L.A. in space” and barely made back its $20 million dollar budget. Carpenter then sued for plagiarism, and a French court ruled that Besson’s company EuropaCorp had to pay $502,000 in damages. But after a year of lockdown, does Lockout’s punishment still fit the crime?

Legends Podcast #514; Cube (Sci-Fi)

In 1997, the Canadian sci-fi horror film Cube asked the question: what if six strangers were trapped in a maze filled with traps and the only way for them to escape was by using... math? Okay, so on paper Cube is a movie that should not work. It was made for just $350K, in one room, with a bunch of unknown actors. There are a few special effects, but blink and you’ll miss them. There are no answers given as to why anything is happening. The movie is just all cube. Yet Cube is a cult classic, with two follow-ups and a Japanese remake under its belt, and a remake reportedly in development. And after a year in isolation, with every day the same as the last, Cube might just be the most relatable movie of our era.

Legends Podcast #513; One Night In Miami... (Black History)

The global box office shut down has led many theatrical releases to seek other avenues for distribution - including films seeking award recognition. Earlier this year, Amazon Prime released One Night in Miami…, which is the first film directed by Regina King and was written by Kemp Powers, based on his 2013 play. While it received showings at multiple film festivals - including the first movie by a Black female director to be selected for the Venice Film Festival - and a limited release prior to its streaming debut, Amazon Prime is betting that strong word of mouth on streaming will boost the pic’s Oscar hopes. Within the last few weeks ago, One Night in Miami… scored three Golden Globe noms and five Critics Choice Award nods. Now Legends Podcast is checking in to the Hampton House to hang out with four legendary men.

Legends Podcast #512; Space Sweepers (Sci-Fi)

The global box office shut down has led many theatrical releases to seek other avenues for distribution. Earlier this month, Netflix released Space Sweepers, the first-ever South Korean space blockbuster, which had originally been aimed at cinemas. After multiple delays due to the pandemic, the film’s studio sold the movie’s exclusive rights to Netflix in hopes that it would be well-received and could jump-start a franchise. Upon release, Space Sweepers topped Netflix’s own Top 10 list in several countries around the globe, including South Korea. Now we’re checking in with the crew of the Spaceship Victory to see if this international action movie is trash or treasure.

Legends Podcast #511; I’m Thinking of Ending Things

This episode includes a discussion of suicide. If you are in crisis, you should call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255), or text the Crisis Text Line (text HELLO to 741741). Both services are free and available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Last year brought a plethora of new original films to streaming services. In September, Netflix released I’m Thinking of Ending Things, based on the novel by Iain Reid, and adapted and directed by Charlie Kaufman. Starring Fargo’s Jessie Buckley, Fargo’s Jesse Plemons, Fargo’s David Thewlis, and Knives Out’s Toni Collette, this mind-mending movie was well-received by critics. With awards season looming, we’re putting on the snow chains and heading to Tulsey Town.

Legends Podcast #510; The Old Guard (Action)

Last year brought a bumper crop of new original films to streaming services. In July, Netflix released The Old Guard, based on the Image Comics series by Greg Rucka. Starring Mad Max: Fury Road’s Charlize Theron as the leader of a group of immortal mercenaries, this globe-trotting action movie reportedly drew 78 million viewers in the first month of release. With a sequel reportedly in development, we’re pressing play to see Imperator Furiosa do her best Wolverine impression.

From the 1988 film My Neighbor Totoro, best known to American audiences from the 2006 English-dub version released by Disney, the titular Totoro has become a brand icon for Studio Ghibli - a silent, imposing counterpart to Mickey Mouse. Written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki and based on his own childhood, My Neighbor Totoro has become a worldwide cult classic. We’re wrapping up our Kurosawa trilogy with 1958’s The Hidden Fortress. Cited often as one of George Lucas’s direct inspirations for Star Wars, The Hidden Fortress features two bumbling fools, a fugitive princess, a badass swordsman, and a scarred bad guy who carries a grudge but is ultimately redeemed by his good heart! Toshiro Mifune shows up again for the third time this month in this epic from a long time ago and somewhere far, far away - feudal Japan!

Legends Podcast #507; Seven Samurai (Japanuary)

We’re continuing the month with Kurosawa’s 1954 film Seven Samurai. Released by Toho Studios the same year as the first Godzilla, Seven Samurai actually cost more than the monster flick and took three times as long to shoot, and though both would be remembered as two of the greatest films ever made, Seven Samurai remains one of the most heavily referenced, remade, or reworked, films of all time. Coming in at a whopping three-and-a-half hours (with intermission!) Seven Samurai is hailed as the first modern action movie. This is episode Five Hundred and Seven of Legends Podcast!

Legends Podcast #506; Rashomon (Japanuary)

We’re kicking Japanese classics month off with Akira Kurosawa’s 1950 film Rashomon. Notable for its use of conflicting points-of-view on the same event, Rashomon has become synonymous for storytelling by unreliable narrators or differing takes on a simultaneous scene. Rashomon is considered one of the greatest movies ever made, but does it stand up to our Legendary scrutiny? We try to get our stories straight and start the year in style!

Legends Podcast #501; GoldenEye (Bond Movies/25th Anniversary)

The first Bond movie not to be based on an Ian Fleming story, GoldenEye was a huge hit, grossing more than Dalton’s two flicks combined. Directed by Martin Campbell (who would return to introduce a new Bond with Casino Royale) and introducing Judi Dench as M, GoldenEye also spawned a hit video game that might be more popular than the movie. Brosnan went on to play Bond three more times, but never quite achieved the acclaim he received for his first outing. Now, twenty-five years later, we’re playing a few rounds in the Facility to celebrate GoldenEye.
