Director John Landis and actor John Belushi had already made a hit film together - 1978's National Lampoon's Animal House - when they teamed up with Dan Ackroyd to make movie based on Belushi and Ackroyd's Saturday Night Live characters. The resulting film was one of the most expensive comedies ever made, with cost overruns (including a de facto budget line for cocaine) attributed to Belushi's behavior. The film also features well-known musical artists like Aretha Franklin and Ray Charles, shot-on-location Chicagoland scenery, and the most automobiles ever destroyed in the production of a motion picture.
